Did you know that Srilanka is home for eight UNESCO World Heritage sites? and 6 of them are either ancient ruins or buildings? 4 of them are ruins of ancient cities which belonged to different time periods of Sir lanka in the past, well this tour will take you to most of them starting from Kandy through to Sigiriya , Dambulla, sacred cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, finally to Negombo - famed to be an small fishing village with mesmerizing sunsets!

DAY 1

Arrival- Pick up |Kandy

Arrive in Colombo (CMB), Sri Lanka.

 

Welcome to the wonder of Asia. In the coming few days, you will be discovering this beautiful paradise island rich in heritage, thrill, scenic, pristine and hospitality in abundance with team WanderlustAsia.

 
Meet your tour representative who will greet you with a warm Sri Lankan welcome. Enjoy a refreshingly cup of Ceylon Tea and proceed to Hotel in Kandy, which is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic- a supreme place of Buddhist worship. A place that gets illuminated with all the glamour during Perahera time.

DAY 2

Dambulla  

Breakfast at hotel.

Proceed to a city tour in Kandy

The first on the agenda is a visit to the majestic Tooth Relic Shrine (Dalada Maligawa) which has preserved its ancient splendor –adorned with Kandyan architecture and spectacular interior. On your way there you will walk past the beautiful Kandy Lake. A walk around the place you will witness the traditional drumming during morning, noon and evening, learn the ritual and honours accorded to the Relic, the history, custodians of this iconic heritage.


Transfer to Dambulla

This expedition will take you through historical and scenic beauty of Dambulla. 

Here you’ve got a bit of climbing to do as well.

First to the world famous Dambulla rock temple.  A vast isolated rock mass, on a gentle slope. As you climb, you will enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding. An ancient King on exile is said to have taken refuge here. Inside the cave you find a large collection of Buddha statues and the roof which is a beautiful canvas of Buddhist paintings –some 2000 years old.


Dambulla is also considered the Centre of Vegetable distribution. So why not try a traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry meal too.

DAY 3

Polonnaruwa|Sigiriya

Breakfast at hotel.

Following breakfast, head to Sigiriya.

Imagine you in the middle of a massive 200 meter rock fortress of the 5th Century AD… A royal palace built on a colossal rock using the most sophisticated technology; having unique frescoes dating back to over thousand years - a place that has intrigued many archaeologists and historians, let alone the tourists, all over the world.

The remains of the citadel on a massive rock, the unique Lion Gate, the mirror wall, moats, ponds and archaeological ruins of Sigiriya makes it the Eighth Wonder of the World.  Well, you have to see it to believe it!

We suggest you to visit the museum outside at the main entrance on your way down or before you climb up the summit for a little familiarization to make the most of your tour.

Following with the climb to Sigiriya you will be first you will be heading to the world famous Dambulla rock temple.  A vast isolated rock mass, on a gentle slope. Continue to Polonnaruwa, visit the UNESCO heritage sites

Polonnaruwa is a grandeur unsurpassed. An interesting mix of Buddhism, ancient craftsmanship, arts, architecture and South Indian Hindu culture spread across around 122 hectares - an experience that would forever be etched in the traveller’s mind.

Within this walled citadel you would find the significant monuments best preserved to date such as the flora stone pillared pavilion called Nissanka Latha Mandapaya; the Royal Citadel and the ponds; the impressive Vatadage relic house; Tuparamaya image house; the circular relic house; the golden pinnacled stupa- Rankoth Vehera; the extravagant moonstones; guard stones and sculpture; Kirivehera dagoba; the glorious Polonnanru Gal Viharaya with breathtaking rock sculptures; Menik Vehera- a Lotus shaped stupa; the statue of King Parakramabahu the Great carved on a rock (during this King’s reign Polonanurwa reached its golden era) and the mammoth man-made inland Lake - Parakrama Samudraya which irrigates the city and the farmlands even today.

DAY 4

Anuradhapura

Proceed to Anuradhapura

Taking you back in time -to Sri Lanka’s First Capital. 

The heart of Sri Lanka’s majestic civilization enriched with Buddhism, exquisite sculpture, magnificent feats of architecture and hydraulic sophistication depicted by the cluster of reservoirs and irrigation channels- all reminiscent of the grandeur of a bygone era founded in the 5th Century BC and self- sustained in the decades afterwards.                           

Your itinerary in Anuradhapura kingdom is made of these:

A guided tour around the age old ruins depicting the embodiment of Buddhism, history and culture; climbing a flight of 1840 steps up the Mihintalaya Rock considered the cradle of Buddhism and exploring the Eight Sacred Sites (Atamastana) Buddha is said to have visited namely Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya- a sapling of the scared Bo tree where Buddha attained enlightenment, Ruwanwelisaya- containing the relic of Buddha, Thuparamaya- a dagoba constructed in the earliest times, Lovamahapaya- the bronze tiled palace, Abhayagiri - the monastic centre in the form of a humped dagoba, Jetavanarama- the world’s tallest Stupa, Mirisaveti Stupa built safeguarding Buddha relics placed on a king’s scepter and Lankarama stupa.

DAY 5

Negombo

Proceed to Negombo.

You are meeting the locals in the vibrant coastal city of Negombo, not so far away from the Katunayake Airport, to indulge in a diverse experience with its picturesque beaches, the lagoon, dazzling fishing villages and archaeological sites. Also called ‘Little Rome’ for the spectrum of Roman Catholic churches and statues of saints marking the landscape.

 

Get ready to explore the beachside behind the buzzing fish market place where rows and rows of mats of dry fish are laid; the picturesque Negombo lagoon with hundreds of colourful boats and trawlers anchored, a boat ride in the lagoon to enjoy its rich mangroves and water birds; and to call it a day admiring the scenic view of the Catamaran sail boats retuning from the sea at sunset.

Finally, to handcraft shops at Lewis Place, if you want a souvenir or two back from your journey that is!
