Proceed to Sigiriya

This expedition will take you through historical and scenic beauty of Dambulla too.  Here you’ve got a bit of climbing to do as well as your next stop

First to the world famous Dambulla rock temple.  A vast isolated rock mass, on a gentle slope. As you climb, you will enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding. An ancient King on exile is said to have taken refuge here. Inside the cave you find a large collection of Buddha statues and the roof which is a beautiful canvas of Buddhist paintings –some 2000 years old.

Dambulla is also considered the Centre of Vegetable distribution. So why not try a traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry meal too.

Following lunch you will head to the incredible Sigiriya rock fortress.

Imagine you in the middle of a massive 200 meter rock fortress of 5th Century AD… A royal palace built on a colossal rock using the most sophisticated technology; having unique frescoes dating back to over thousand years - a place that has intrigued many archaeologists and historians, let alone the tourists, all over the world.

How do you feel?  Enthralled right?

The remains of the citadel on a massive rock, the unique Lion Gate, the mirror wall, moats, ponds and archaeological ruins of Sigiriya rock makes it the Eighth Wonder of the World.  Well, you have to see it to believe it!

We suggest you visit the museum outside at the main entrance on your way down or before you climb up the summit for a little familiarization to make the most of your tour.

Head to the Pidurangala rock temple.  While Sigiriya Rock is rich in history and has some pretty dramatic features such as the lion’s paw and the mirror wall, Pidurangala Rock has a much more natural feel, despite also housing a temple.

Pidurangala Rock is adjacent to Sigiriya Rock and is the best viewing spot of Sigiriya Rock as it is only slightly lower. Pidurangala is a popular spot for sunrise as you can enjoy 360-degree views of not only the valleys but also Sigiriya Rock.

After the climb you will get to experience the typical Sri Lankan village lifestyle at a rural village near Habarana. The Hiriwadunna Village tour begins with a beautiful trek to a manmade reservoir, ehich you will find surrounded by scrub jungle and a hive, look out for birds, butterflies, and perhaps even a crocodile as well as the villagers fishing or washing clothes at the periphery of the lake. Hop into a boat and sail to the other side of a lake, then experience a bullock cart ride to a village house where you will enjoy an authentic Sri Lankan lunch. After an hour or so for lunch, board the Safari Jeep for the return trip to your hotel.

Proceed to Kandy

En-route visit a spice garden. Sri Lanka’s world renowned spices at their source, where smells of cinnamons, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and mace overwhelm the senses and the visitors are provided an insight into an age old industry of spice production, which attracted many a European and Asian merchants to the ports of ancient Sri Lanka

Continue to Kandy

This Wanderlust expedition is taking you to the regal Kandy kingdom which is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic- a supreme place of Buddhist worship. A place that gets illuminated with all the glamour during Perahera time. 

The first on the agenda is a visit to the majestic Tooth Relic Shrine (Dalada Maligawa) which has preserved its ancient splendour –adorned with Kandyan architecture and spectacular interior. On your way there you will walk past the beautiful Kandy Lake. A walk around the place you will witness the traditional drumming during morning, noon and evening, learn the ritual and honours accorded to the Relic, the history, custodians of this iconic heritage. And finally to enjoy a cultural performance to get a taste of the aesthetic heritage of our Kandy kingdom.

Proceed to Kandy train station to catch your train to Nanu Oya which leaves at 1100 Hrs.

Reach Nanu Oya train station at 1445 Hrs. where your driver will pick you up and transfer to Nuwara Eliya, the town that shouldn’t be missed in the land of Ceylon. The picturesque Nuwara Eliya – also known the world over as ‘little England’ has wonderful tea estates.

The tour will take you on a scenic drive through acres of lush tea estates; here you will see tea pickers, mostly females clad in sarees, carefully picking the tender two leaves and a bud which are essential to making fine tea. Check into the hotel after a tour around the Nuwara Eliya town.

Nuwara Eliya

If Amidst misty mountains and ice cold streams in Sri Lanka’s windiest most location, is where you want be Horton Plains it the place for you!

Horton plains plateau leading down to the World’s End is a heart stopping and scenic cliff of 800meters. The breath taking view from the World’s End is something you will undoubtedly take back home from the journey- if you visit the place before the clouds roll in that is. You can also enjoy the Baker’s Falls- a mesmerizing waterfall that can be accessed through a short trail across the forest, the national park, the fauna and flora and the grasslands within Horton Plains.  

End of the trip will have you wonder if photographs actually do justice to the real awesomeness of some landscapes.

On the way back you will have the opportunity to visit a tea factory to witness the process of making your cuppa. May we also remind you not forget to indulge in the pleasure in fine Ceylon Tea- Black Tea, Green Tea, Oolong Tea or silver tips whatever your choice is?

Once the tea excursion is done, you can head on to Nuwara Eliya Golf Club for golfing or take a mountain bike ride to enjoy the scenic view of your surroundings basking in the mist, the lush greenery, cool climes, waterfalls and the mountain range.

Yala | Kumana

A tour that is bound to bring ample fun and photo delights. Yala National Park’s incredible wild life has made this vast area of forest, grassland and lagoons a world famous safari park.

We know that the safari ride in this wildlife kingdom is what you look forward to the most. An unexpected “elephant on the road!” moment , the mating dance of a peacock, a wild buffalo  trying to defend itself from an intruder, the deer and the leopards -Nature tourism and adventure- you are going to have it all there. 

Yala is a heaven of Birds too. Thousands of water birds that have migrated to the Yala lagoons as well as the residing forest birds makes Yala a bird lover’s paradise.

Proceed to Mirissa

En-route visit the Katharagama, a popular pilgrimage destination frequented by adherents of all religions in Sri Lanka. The main Shrine is devoted to Skanda, popularly described in eulogies as God with six faces and twelve arms whose assistance is sought for worldly gain. The history of the shrine dates back to 2 century BC.

And the Kiriwehera Temple Beyond the Maha Devale is a meeting hall on the north side of the square. From the east gate, a Tulip tree avenue leads 500m past further lines of stalls selling lotus flowers to the Kiri wehera dating from 1 BC. It is a milk white large stupa with a well maintained peaceful courtyard. The temple elephant is often seen shackled to the trees here, being fed a copious diet of palm leaves. Its only unusual feature being the two sets of square walls which enclose it. A modern statue of King Dutugamunu stands behind the dagoba.

Continue to Mirissa

We don’t mean to boast but Sri Lanka is blessed with plentiful beaches.

Want to see Blue whales and Dolphins - yes this is the place to make those close encounters. And for surfing too, if you would like.

If it’s a quick laid back beach getaway that you are looking for, away from the hustle and the bustle of day today life (getting cozy on a hammock and enjoying the tropical ambience whilst zipping a delicious king coconut water) – then Mirissa is the perfect spot.  Go ahead, take a jump into the calm blue waters and pamper yourself in the gentle waves.  Mirissa beach is at its best during November to April.

DAY 10

Head toward the Mirissa harbour for your Dolphin & Whale watching tour. Breakfast on boat.

Proceed to Galle.

Spend time in a beautiful fortified city, down south. Galle-a UNESCO Heritage site.

Discovering the old and the new. Discovering people amidst a wonderful mix of architecture and culture.

Taking a stroll down the old town with interesting street names would be like a walk down memory lane, reminiscing Ceylon in the Colonial days.

Impatient to find out what you will explore here? Here you go 

Portuguese constructed and Dutch fortified majestic Galle Fort and the landmarks within the premises such as the Galle National Museum depicting history and the life of the Galle inhabitants; the Fort Library - the treasure trove of rare books; Galle maritime Museum, heritage houses in the narrow alleys and the mix bag of boutiques and shops in every nook and corner selling antiques, souvenirs, jewellery, arts and crafts; eateries and art galleries.  Enjoy your lunch at one of the fancy café’s in Galle city.

This excursion will have you walking quite a bit. Still you would have plenty to see a second time around too.

On your way back to Mirissa stop by the Habaraduwa turtle hatchery, which is mostly admired by nature lovers and both local and foreign tourists. It is a non-profitable organization located as well as a popular tourist attraction in Sri Lanka.  The Sea turtle hatchery is a day care for new born turtles. The babies must be released to the Ocean at the heel of 4 days. Perhaps you will receive a rare chance to release the baby sea turtles to the sea!

DAY 11

Proceed to Negombo

En-route visit Bentota, enjoy a boat ride through the intense depth of Madu river and its rich mangroves with a local tour guide.

Continue to Negombo where you get a diverse experience with its picturesque beaches, the lagoon, dazzling fishing villages and archaeological sites. Also called ‘Little Rome’ for the spectrum of Roman Catholic churches and statues of saints marking the landscape. To call it a day you can spend the evening admiring the scenic view the sea at sunset. Finally, to handcraft shops at Lewis Place, if you want a souvenir or two back from your journey that is!
