Turtle Watching

Sri Lanka is nesting ground for 5 sea turtle species -- the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and loggerhead (Caretta caretta). The principal sea turtle nesting beaches are found on the western, southwestern, and southern coasts of the island. There are the hundreds of turtles coming to the shores during the season to lay eggs particularly to places such as Rekhawa, Kosgoda, Beruwala, and Induruwa beaches, or you can visit the hatcheries operating to protect the turtle eggs and release the baby turtles to the sea.  A great spectacle not to be missed.
