Kotte

Kotte was a wonderful landmark in a renaissance era of Sinhalese literature which rose up gloriously. Kotte was the kingdom before the Kandy era.


Alakeshwara Tomb
It is a belief that this is the tomb of the originator of Kotte, Alakeshwara. the Tomb of Alakeshwara can be effectively come to through the Alakeshwara street on the Pittakotte street. He was a minister of Gampola ruler King Vikramabahu III who chased away the invader Arya Chakravarti's armies. As per nearby legend, the Alakeshwara watched a rabbit being pursued by a jackal and when it went to a specific locale the rabbit began pursuing the jackal consequently. He thought about appropriate to fabricate a fortification. The victorious land got the initiation as Jayawardhanapura.
The two structural sites near the arch made of Kabook blocks. Comparatively one is larger. It is 41ft long and 18.5ft wide and rectangular in shape. The second structure is irregular shaped. On behalf of that, it assumes this could be the palace of Alakeshwara due to the artifacts found such as water filters and grinding stones.


Veherakanda Ruins
One of the bunch archeologically noteworthy destinations staying inside Colombo is Veherakanda. The site is about 4km from Pitakotte Junction and can be reached going through a maze of by streets.
A raised rectangular formed stage about 5.5ft high holds two stupas encompassed by colossal Na trees. The stage is 97ft long and 58ft in width. There are two flights of steps made of laterite; paving the way to the stage and even straight up to the stupas. One of the stupas is expansive in scale, around the diameter of 30ft and the other one is 24ft in diameter.
On the left of the structure, one can see a little structure where potentially a statue of the Buddha may have been kept. Unfortunately, today no such statue can be seen. The land around the stage demonstrates that there had been not many different structures around this. All the remainders design a big picture of what once would have been a piece of a lot bigger temple complex.


Beddagana Wetland Park
The Beddagana Wetland can be found easily by anyone as it located visible to Battaramulla town and Sri Jayawardenapura Parliamentary Complex.
This wonderful park, spread over 18 hectares, one of the boundary formations of beautiful Diyawanna Oya and it is totally green. This Beddagana wetland park, which is home to endemic bird species and small animal species found within Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte and it is an oasis in a busy city.
A very beautiful yet simple park has a tranquil environment and quietness mind calm a traveler. The wooden ways over marshes direct someone though signboards. Another place photographs and names of birds, butterflies are displaying. During a morning or evening visit to enjoy the sunrise and sunset, there are several galleries. The middle duck pond makes an art of the city and its a nice scene to look from the cabin there.
As mentioned earlier, the Beddagana Wet Land Park is home to various kinds of plants and animals, a haven to Sri Lankan and Asian Wetlands species. Among butterflies Common Mormon, Lemon Emigrant, Jezebel, and among bird species are Stork Billed Kingfisher, Whiskered Tern, Pacific Golden Plover are dwelling. Scientific studies done at the gardens are comprised of 50 bird species, 20 fish species, and 119 butterflies. The 100 species of plants have made the living better to the animal population. Moreover, August to April its quite busy as migrant birds reach the park as it is one of the famous. Eco-lovers' best bird watching session rounds around 6.00 a.m. or after 4.00 p.m. The park is open from 6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
A flood controlling remedy, a habitat of different plants and animals, and a lowering of the temperature in the surrounding areas are among the intentions of the establishment of the wet ground gardens. The entrance fees can be collected at the entrance as Rs. 100.00, 50.00, 1,000.00 and 500.00 for local adults, local children, foreign adults, and foreign child respectively.


Gal Ambalama
Ambalama is a resting place. The stone ambalama of Pitakotte is one of the oldest found in Sri Lanka. Located in three road junction Colombo - Nugegoda, Battaramulla - Dehiwala, and Borella - Thalawathugoda.
Built-in Kotte era considers as a spot where people stayed to rest as well as a stop for strangers to stay till the permission for access. Ambalama is 20ft in length and 15ft in width. The roof has built on 12 stone pillars.
Later on, the Ambalama was removed from the place where the road was expanding and later restored slightly backward. This is an archaeologically protected monument under the Antiquities Ordinance No. 09 of 1940.


Diyatha Uyana

Kotte Museum
In Kotte municipal council territory, the museum is located in the Bangala junction of Ethul-Kotte. This was the house of Mr. E. W. Perera one of the greatest sons of Kotte known as the lion of Kotte.
The museum holds regional flags, weapons, local costumes, pottery, coins, chinaware, and some other relics. At the entrance, a model of old Kotte city with fortifications is displayed. Black and white photographs of archaeological Kotte, a monograph on Sinhalese banners and standards, Mr. E. W. Perera's famous work are a rich collection here.
Tiny but fascinating accumulation of small scale statues is additionally to view. An ivory Samadhi Buddha, a wooden standing Buddha statue found close to the Kotte Dalada Medura (temple of tooth relic of old Kotte), a limestone Samadhi Buddha statue, a metal bowing figure, the female figuring found nearby Mahasen Devmedura, carved handle fixed bell with the shape of a human figure, bronze cut lamp, silver wine cup, metal chunam pouches, bead chains, and silver bangles, turtle shell hair ornaments etc are additional.

Perera from the region of Kotte are to be seen and The back lobby is devoted to a gathering of coins.
